Solid Ether

Design & Programming for the Web

I'm Dan Jewett and Solid Ether is my space on the web. I do web design and programming, and I help people make their computers work properly.

I also have a few things to say about subjects other than my work.

Lost Grade Book Recovered at Hackley

Lower School Spanish teacher finds missing grade book. Tells search crews, “Never mind.”

The search for the book, containing the Spanish grades of Hackley School third and fourth graders, involved a large scale dismantling of the Hackley Lower School building by professional crews trained for just such an emergency. (See picture below.)

Spanish teacher Anne Gatschet said she was, “slightly embarrassed,” when she discovered that the missing book was, “under the front seat of my car the whole time.”

Gradebook Search Area - Hackley Lower School

Hackley School headmaster Walter Johnson had this to say when told of the grade book’s recovery. “I’m just happy that the grades of these students have been recovered, and that we can get started on the restoration of the building. I also think that this whole effort shows the depth of Hackley’s commitment to the needs of the faculty and the lengths to which we will go to support them in their teaching endeavors.”

Ms. Gatschet related that she was “very upset” about losing the book when she appealed to the administration for help, and was encouraged by their willingness to “help me out of a bind.”

Ms. Gatschet - I found it!

Gatschet was elated by the recovery of the book and encouraged the search crews to “just go ahead and put everything back like you found it.”

Programming Ruby Makes You Blind

The other evening I was writing code to rebuild “Find Coltrane” with Ruby on Rails instead of PHP. Before I went to bed I read something from “The Pickaxe Book” and then set it on my nightstand.

In the morning, I discovered that all 832 pages had fallen off the nightstand and landed on my glasses (also left on the nightstand) effectively rendering me sightless.

If you are considering learning a programming language, please be aware of the possible consequences to your health and choose one that has brief, thin, how-to manuals.

Character Encoding Issues

I’ve just relaoded the MySQL database for the site into a new DB with the encoding improperly set. Until I can get in and fix that, there will likely be quite a number of odd looking characters sprinked throughout the text.

Update: Think it’s all fixed now.

Math made art?

Well I finally added something to the Photo Set section of the website but I can’t take credit for creating the images. I have a screensaver called Fracture that I’ve been messing around with, and Fracture created the Fractals Photo Set.

Fracture uses various mathematical algorithms to generate fractal images. Fractals are studied by mathematicians interested in Chaos Theory.

From what I understand about Chaos Theory… Ok, I don’t understand anything about Chaos Theory, but I really like these images. The full size images are enormous, but if you see one that you like, it’s probably worth loading the large version because the details are quite striking.
